New on 'My Xbox': (Finally!) Manage your Personal Profile!

This morning, Microsoft released an update to the Profile Section on My Xbox that allows you to edit your Name, Location, and Personal Bio right from Xbox.com.

This allows those without a 360 Messenger Kit to quickly tell the community about themselves, which is not only visible on the Xbox console, but now on Xbox.com! When you view a member's GamerCard on Xbox.com, you can now see the information they allow you to. (Privacy Settings apply!)

You can directly access and edit your Personal Profile from the following page:
https://live.xbox.com/accounts/PersonalProf...Management.aspx

These are great additions to the Xbox.com website, and certainly welcome changes for the community.

Are you an Overachiever? Use MGC Profiles to highlight your greatest gaming efforts!

Achieving GamerScore has been rather one-dimensional - do this, get points. Rinse, repeat.
Sure, you've played a lot of games by now, but how many actually took real respectful effort?

Recently, we added indicators that gave an at-a-glance view of whether you were ahead or behind the curve based on the Community's average GamerScore. While this is a great way to see what games you might want to work on, it didn't really help define priorities for your next Achievement attempts.

Similarly, simply showing that you were above the average didn't highlight your greatest efforts or let you feel satisfaction in your Achievement-grabbing.

MGC has changed this by implementing a new 'Effort' filter on our Profiles!

By selecting this sort method, you can quickly get a list of your games, ordered by how proud you should be for your efforts. For me, as you can see, the BK Promotional game Big Bumpin is my greatest gaming exploit (is that bad?), representing a near-500% gain over the rest of the community.

It also works in reverse. Simply select 'Effort (Worst - Best)' to give you a hint as to what games you should pull up your score in.

The great thing about this list is that it allows other people to really see how much work you've put into your points. Boosting your score with games like Avatar? With so many people grabbing the easy points, having a full 1000 GamerScore is only 4% over the average, and isn't worth very much 'gamer cred'.

I've already used this myself! For me, I had zero GamerScore in Fight Night Round 3 until I saw that the average was about 570 GamerScore, making it my most embarrassing entry on my Profile. I spent some time this weekend correcting this issue, and look forward to gaining some additional Achievements in the EA Sports title in the coming days.

Check out the Efforts on your MGC Profile and come share your greatest gaming Acheivements!

The first 'MGC Tweakend' comes to a close

So I've just wrapped up a weekend of making small changes and enhancements to various parts of the site, which I have informally dubbed the MGC Tweakend.

I hope to have many more of these over the course of the year, as it allows me to make incremental additions to existing systems to better help and inform the community.

At the small end of these changes, the Genre Leaderboard has been able to contain a visual eyesore - the game list icons.

Instead of simply dumping the whole list on the screen, there is now a gallery which you can scroll through if you desire. You may also notice some additional data about the genre, such as the number of games and their Score and Achievement totals.

On the larger side of things, there's one fairly significant change that should appease both sides of the 'Should game demos show?' argument. Now, by default, Arcade titles with Zero GamerScore prior to the Fall Update will not display on your list of games. We have introduced a control to include them, if you wish.

In addition to tidying up the Profile, it will give you a more accurate count of your possible GamerScore, as your number of games and subsequent Achievement totals will change with this setting. We believe this gives the community greater control over how they wish to evaluate profiles.

We didn't stop there, though!
First, your Completion Leaderboard ranking is now located under your World/Country ranks.
Also, a visual indicator of your GamerScore against the MGC Average is displayed next to those Averages. This will give you an at-a-glance view of how well you're doing versus the rest of the community.

While these are small changes by themselves, they represent a combined commitment to hearing and appreciating the feedback of our community.

The MGC Tweakend has been quite fun, and we look to have many more in the future. Next up are addressing requests for our GamerPic Scout, and something new!

Are these welcome changes? Is there anything you were personally hoping for, in this list? Let us know!

[UPDATE 1] Updates Disabled Again While Xbox Live Experiences Issues

Just a quick note that we tried to enable updates again, and realized that Xbox Live is up to its recent tricks of reporting GamerTags as invalid.

<strike>To protect everyone's game history and to minimize impact on MGC, we're turning updates off until this is fully resolved.</strike> What I'll try to do between today and tomorrow is implement the ability to simply disable deletions, so that unaffected members can still get updates.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and wish the Xbox Team a speedy recovery from this odd accounting issue.

UPDATE: I have implemented this change. Affected users will not have their GamerTags deleted, everyone else will see normal updates. This does introduce a bug for truly invalid GamerTags, and this is being looked into, you do not need to report it.
Let me know if you run into any trouble on this temporary 'hybrid' setup.

Image-Based Zune Cards allows forums to Join the Social!

Do you love your Zune? Do you listen to the best music around, and want to share your tastes?
Microsoft's Zune Card gives you a great way to share that information with your friends -- if you're using a site where Flash is allowed.

But what about Forums? Community Websites? Email? How can I tell you about the latest track or album I listened to if you don't use Flash?

MGC has released an image-based Zune Card as a small beta to preclude a new site, MZC (bet you can't guess what that stands for!)

With our Zune Card, we look nearly the same as the official Flash version, but with our signature flair that you've come to expect from MGC. Artist names are displayed underneath the album images, and the last three songs are populated in the upper corner.

Images are updated every 30 minutes, for those with active listening habits.

Since this is a pre-release, there is no generator. But you can get the image at the following URL:
http://card.mygamercard.net/apps/zune/ZUNETAG.png where ZUNETAG is your actual tag from Zune.net
Combine it with a link to your Social page!

Feedback always welcome!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday!

Wow, three celebrations in one!

First, a very Happy Thanksgiving to our US members. I know I'll be enjoying the time with my family today, and I hope you will, too. (Er, your own family, that is )

Secondly, Happy Birthday to the Xbox 360 and to MGC! It's amazing that we have lasted this long and continue to get stronger every month, and it's an honor to share a birthday with the incredible Xbox 360! We hope to be around to serve the community for the all of the 360's future birthdays.

Now onto some news you can use.

The Retro Weekend has started! I've decided to keep registration open throughout the event, for those who may have heard about it too late... and since it's never too late to enter, tell your friends!

Also, make sure you've completed all of the eligibility requirements! Some of you don't have your MGC GamerCard Settings correct, which will not give us the information needed to track your progress!

Lastly, thanks to MageGriff, I've added another Arcade title to the eligibility and prize lineup! You can now play Mutant Storm Reloaded, or any of the other launch titles, and have a chance to win Mutant Storm Empire! That makes a total of 11 prizes! That makes for a pretty high probability of you grabbing something - but only if you Go Retro!
